SS Stewart - Gibson conversion 1931
FON 9744-36. Except for its lack of a Gibson decal, the pot of this banjo is identical to that of a Gibson style 11 and besides the tailpiece it remains in the original condition. Colored maple rim, nickel hardware including the one piece pot metal Doehler flange with almost no pull, one piece armrest, pearloid decorated resonator with red and black silkscreened designs on the back, painted colored finish on the sides of the resonator, white binding. Single coordinator rod, original first generation Grover tailpiece changed for prewar Grover Presto. The rim is not equipped with a tonering, the head rests on a simple 11 inch brass hoop.
The maple fivestring neck was built by Robin Smith of Heartland Banjo & Guitar Co. and is the exact replica of the period Gibson style 11 neck. It features the adjustable truss rod, pearloid fingerboard with stenciled design, Gotoh tuners and the Fivestar 5th peg. The finish is matched to the color on the resonator.
In the prewar era Gibson produced instruments for other companies under different brands, SS Stewart being one of them. These instrument were usually identical to specific Gibson models with the exception of the adjustable truss rod.
This conversion doesn´t sport any tonering but it offers surprisingly strong prewar sound.
Sériové číslo 9744-36. Kromě obtisku Gibson na korpusu je celé tělo identické s Gibsonem style 11 a je kromě struníku v původním stavu. Barevný javorový korpus, poniklované kovové části včetně jednodílné slitinové flange Doehler, která nevykazuje téměř žádné pokroucení, jednodílná opěrka. Rezonátor je na zadní straně ozdoben červeno – černým sítotiskovým designem, strany rezonátoru jsou černomodré s bílým lemem. Vyrovnávací tyč je pouze jedna, původní jednoduchý struník je vyměněný za předválečný Grover Presto. Původní korpus není osazen toneringem a blána sedí jen na 11 palcové mosazné trubičce.
Pětistrunný javorový krk vyrobil Robin Smith z Heartland Banjo & Guitar a je přesnou kopií krku Gibson modelu 11. Je opatřen štelovatelnou výztuhou, celuloidovým hmatníkem s lakovanými značkami a designem na kolíkové hlavě. Lak na krku je přizpůsoben černomodrým tónům na rezonátoru. Mechaniky jsou nové Gotoh a pátý kolík Fivestar.
V předválečnám období vyráběl Gibson nástroje pro různé společnosti a prodejce pod jinými jmény. Tyto nástroje byly většinou identické s různými Gibson modely s tím rozdílem, že krk neměl kovovou výztuhu. Tato konverze zůstává bez toneringu, nicméně banjo má překvapivě silný a barevný zvuk.
