Gibson Mastertone TB 6 conversion 1928
FON 9106–10. Very fine condition. Gold-plated hardware with Bella Voce engraving pattern on the flange, tonering, tension hoop and armrest. Two-piece flange construction, forty-hole archtop tonering. Four-hump Grover tailpiece. Both tenor and five-string necks ar made of curly maple, feature the ebony fingerboards and„Hearts and Flowers“ Style 6 inlays and the „Checkerboard“ binding, which was used on the curly maple resonator as well. The back of the fiddle-cut peghead has beautiful maple overlay and the banjo left the factory with gold-plated tuners and MOP keys that were often used on Weymann banjos of the period. The conversion neck was built by Prucha Bluegrass Instruments and it´s a stunning work.
According to catalog specifications, Style 6 banjos featured a “two-tone effect” which was the new sunburst finish Gibson referred to as “Argentine grey”. Rather than the Argentine grey finish, this example features an unusual uniform blond finish.
Style 6 banjos were introduced in 1927 and were listed at $300. They were manufactured until 1937. The former owner of this banjo played in a 1930s ragtime band called „The Traveling Vagabonds“.
Sériové číslo 9106-10. Velice zachovalý stav. Kovové části silně zlacené a gravírované ve stylu „Bella Voce“ na flangi, toneringu, stahovacím kroužku a opěrce. Konstrukce sestává z dvoudílné flange a arch-top toneringu se 40 dírami. Struník je zlacený Grover clamshell 4 hump. Oba krky (tenorový a pětistrunný) jsou vyrobeny z kadeřavého javoru, ebenový hmatník je vykládán speciálním vzorem „Srdce a květy Style 6“ a krk stejně jako rezonátor je olištován je obložkou „Checkerboard (šachovnice)“. Zadní strana hlavičky je překryta krásnou javorovou dýhou a banjo bylo originálně osazeno pozlacenými ladícími kolíky s perleťovými olivkami, které se často používaly na konkurenční banja značky Weymann. Fantastický pětistrunný krk byl vyroben Prucha Bluegrass Instruments.
Katalogy uváděly, že banja stylu 6 byly lakovány speciálním sunburst „dvoutónovým efektem“, který se nazýval „Argentinská hnědá“. Tento exemplář opustil továrnu s transparentním „Blond“ lakem, který byl velmi ojedinělý.
Banja stylu 6 byly uvedeny na trh v roce 1927 a byly nabízeny za $300 a produkce byla zastavena v roce 1937. Původní majitel tohoto nástroje působil v 30. letech v ragtimovém bandu „The Traveling Vagabonds“.
